Murano Glass
Murano Glass
Murano. An island in the Venetian Lagoon where world-famous glass is made. Murano Glass, known for its beautiful vibrant colours, is produced using traditional techniques that have been passed on through generations.
In the 13th century, glassmaking was the biggest industry in Venice & in 1291 a law was passed requiring all glass furnaces in Venice to be moved to the Island of Murano. It was claimed that the law was passed to protect the wooden buildings in Venice from the danger of fire from the furnaces, but it is strongly believed it was more to protect the trade secrets of the glassmakers.
Today, we can bring you jewellery made from beautiful Murano glass beads. No two pieces of glass are identical as they are handmade. Some will contain gold or silver foil, some will be produced with a crackle or milky effect. Small bubbles are perfectly normal & are not considered a defect. Despite being made of glass, don’t be fooled, Murano jewellery is extremely hard-wearing.
